Winchester & District Young Carers supports young carers by providing a safe environment for them to share their feelings and experiences, relax with peers and volunteers and have fun.

Wellness

We run programmes throughout the year that brings young carers together from across the District, offering opportunities to explore and share their unique experiences. Our Activity Programme also gives young carers the chance to simply blow off steam with their peers, relax and enjoy fun activities.

Exploration

Our Exploration Programme empowers individuals with the skills and confidence to manage the challenges faced by young carers.  

When: The Exploration Programme takes place on Wednesdays during term time.

Where: Winnall, Winchester.

Objectives:

  • Meet and get to know other young carers. 
  • Understand the illness / disability of the person you care for. 
  • Explore the different types of caring roles. 
  • Recognise the impacts caring can have on you. 
  • Share any worries and/or concerns you may have. 
  • Learn how to deal with feelings. 
  • Create your own wellness toolbox. 
  • Identify your own support network. 
  • Reflect on what you have learnt. 
  • Share your hopes for the future. 

Activities

Our Activities Programme gives young carers time out to relax, have fun and meet others who are in a similar situation to themselves.  

When: Activities are mainly focussed on the school holidays, as during this time young carers are spending significantly more time at home with that cared for person, without the routine of school/college. Some activities are also put on in the term time, after school hours.   

Where: The Activities Programme includes a wide variety of trips to sports and leisure facilities, such as theme parks, bowling, cinema trips etc. 

Objectives: 

  • Meet and spend time with other young people in a similar situation 
  • Enjoy leisure opportunities that might usually be inaccessible to you 
  • Time for you, respite from the role of young carer 
  • Try out a new hobby or activity, have fun or unwind 
  • Socialise with peers, make new friends!

Wellness

The Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) is an evidence based practice delivered by specifically trained staff.  The two day experience includes activities, discussions and workshops that empower people to keep themselves well so they can deal with life’s challenges. This opportunity is open to any parents of young carers who are registered with Winchester & District Young Carers.

When: The programme runs three times a year.

Where: Winnall, Winchester.
